Cat Care Tips For Kitties In Apartments

August 1, 2023
Do you live in an apartment? Kitties are a purrfect choice for people in small spaces. Fluffy doesn’t need a whole lot of room, so she often does quite well in apartments. Here, a Columbia, MD veterinarian offers a few tips to help make your apartment a great spot for your feline buddy.

Vertical Space

Is your place kinda small? You can give Fluffy a bit more room to romp and play by offering her some vertical space. Cat towers are of course the gold star standard here. These are actually multi-purrpose pieces, providing napping spots, jungle gyms. You can also find wall shelves made just for cats.

Windows

Fluffy will definitely appreciate a window with a good view, so she can spy on birds, squirrels, and the rest of the neighborhood denizens. Make sure that your windows and screens close securely. If you have blinds or drapes, arrange the cords so your furry friend can’t get entangled. (Another note on blinds: Cats are notorious for making themselves little ‘doors’ for window access, which ruins the blinds. Consider getting a different window treatment.)

Preventative Care

This one applies no matter where you and Fluffy live. Our feline pals may think they’re invincible, but they’re actually very susceptible to illness and injury. Keep up with Fluffy’s veterinary care needs. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Litterbox

With some apartments, it may be challenging to find a good spot for the litterbox. Consider getting some custom furniture that was made to conceal litterboxes. These are much more attractive than a plain litterbox. You can also hide your pet’s powder room behind a folding screen, or beneath an end table.

Safety

No matter where you live, you’ll want to do some basic petproofing, and keep potential hazards out of paws’ reach. Plants are at the top of the list here. Plants can definitely make your place look cozy and welcoming, and can help with litterbox smells. However, many popular ones are toxic to cats. Lilies, for example, are absolutely deadly to Fluffy: even drinking a bit of the plant’s water can make your feline friend extremely sick. You can find a full list at the ASPCA site here. Ask your vet for more petproofing tips. Do you have questions about your cat’s health or care? Contact us, your local Columbia, MD veterinary hospital, anytime.
