Helping A Senior Dog Get Settled

November 1, 2021
It’s Adopt A Senior Dog Month! If you’re planning to bring an older pooch into your home, you definitely have our support. Getting adopted is a big deal for Fido, so you have to take some steps to make sure that he feels safe and welcomed as he settles in. A Columbia, MD vet offers some tips on this below.

Walk Around The Block

Before you bring Fido in, take him around the block. He’ll be calmer and happier if he has an idea of his new surroundings. This also gives him time to reset. Just let your pup pick the pace. Walking along peacefully with your canine pal can be very relaxing!

Doggy Comforts

Taking a few small steps can help keep your furry pal comfortable. If you have hardwood or tile floors, set out area rugs and runners, so Fido can get good traction without slipping. Nightlights may also help your pup get around after dark.

Shopping

In addition to basic doggy supplies, like food, toys, treats, and dishes, Fido will need a comfy doggy bed. Orthopedic beds are great choices for older pooches. Get one with a washable slipcover, in case your pet has an accident. Your canine buddy may also need ramps or steps.

Dogproofing

You won’t need to petproof to quite the extent that you would for a puppy, but there are some things to address. Keep things like chemicals, toxic plants, and small or sharp objects out of the way. If you have a yard, check your gate and fencing.

Routines

Dogs always feel safest on a set schedule. Get Fido started on his new routine for walks, meals, and playtime right away.

Veterinary Care

A trip to the vet is definitely in order. Fido will probably already be fixed, but you’ll need to get him a full nose-to-tail exam, and make sure he’s current on his parasite control and vaccines. Don’t be afraid to ask for care tips. That’s why we’re here!

Love

One of the best things about senior dogs is the fact that they just tend to be so sweet and calm. Fido is often more interested in chasing Zs than in chasing squirrels, and will be perfectly content to doze at your feet. Enjoy those tail wags! Do you have questions about senior dog care?
