Summer Care For Senior Dogs

July 1, 2019
As your dog ages, you’ll see some changes in his behavior and appearance. Fido’s muzzle may turn grey, and he won’t be as active as he was. You’ll want to make some minor adjustments to your pet’s care regimen, and focus more on keeping him comfortable than on entertainment. This also means making some changes to your dog’s summer care regimen. Below, an Ellicott City, MD vet offers advice on caring for a senior dog in summer.

Grooming

Dead fur and dander can make your dog’s coat quite hot and itchy. Brush Fido regularly to keep his fur smooth and soft. This will also maximize the insulating properties of your pup’s fur.

Paws

Younger dogs often naturally grind their claws down by running around on hot surfaces. Older pooches aren’t as active, so their claws often get too long. This can be quite painful for Fido. He may adjust his gait as a result, which puts a lot of stress on his bones and joints. Keep up with your pet’s pawdicures!

Exercise

Fido will get tired out much more quickly than he used to. When you are walking your pet, keep a close eye on him. Take him in when he gets tired. Your canine pal may also not be able to keep up with you on hikes or other excursions. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Preventative Care

This is important all year, but summer is especially crucial. Keep up with Fido’s vaccines and parasite control products.

Swimming

Swimming can be a great workout for older dogs. The water will support Fido’s weight, making it very easy on his bones and joints. If your canine friend loves the water, and your vet gives the green light, indulge him! Just be sure never to leave him unattended near water.

Heat

Older dogs are much more sensitive to temperature extremes than their younger counterparts are. Limit Fido’s outdoor time during the hottest parts of the day. Take him for his walks in the mornings and evenings, when it is a bit cooler out.

Water

Keeping your furry pal hydrated is very important! Make sure Fido always has clean, fresh water. Give him a bowl of chilled sodium-free broth on hot days as a treat. Please call us, your Ellicott City, MD vet clinic, for all of your pet’s veterinary care needs. We are here for you!
