Adopting a Shelter Dog

October 1, 2018
October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! Going to a shelter is a great way to find your new pet. You’ll not only be able to choose from a variety of adorable pooches, you’ll also be helping other animals. Read on as a Columbia, MD vet discusses adopting a shelter dog.

Benefits of Adopting From A Shelter

There are many reasons to adopt from a shelter. For one thing, you’ll be giving a sweet pooch a second chance at happiness. You’ll also save some money, as going to a shelter is much cheaper than going to a breeder or pet store. Plus, you’ll be promoting good animal welfare: the money you spend on your pet’s adoption fees will help support the shelter, helping them care for other homeless pets.

Finding Fido

Some people go to shelters with a specific type of dog in mind. Others aren’t sure exactly what they are looking for. Keep an open mind: that sweet senior pooch or the lovable goofy mutt may turn out to be the best pet ever! Just be sure to spend time with your new buddy before deciding.

Preparing For The Big Day

Before you bring your canine pal home, you’ll need to do some shopping. Your list should include toys, treats, bedding, dishes, a leash and collar, a crate, waste baggies, food, and grooming supplies. If possible, put all of these things in a quiet back room. This will give Fido a safe, comfy spot to relax and settle in.

Helping Fido Settle In

Don’t be surprised if Fido spends a lot of his time sleeping at first. Being in a shelter is pretty scary for dogs, so your pooch may need to recuperate. If you have other pets, introduce them slowly. The best way to introduce two dogs is by taking them for a long walk on neutral ground. Cats should be kept separate at first, and introduced very gradually. Supervise all interactions between your furry pals until you are sure they are getting along. It’s also important to give your pup time to adjust. Don’t force attention on him, or reprimand him for doing something wrong. Focus on giving him great care for now. Offering toys, treats, and lots of walks and playtime will get that cute tail wagging. Please feel free to call us, your Columbia, MD vet clinic, anytime. We’re here to help!
