6 Reasons To Crate Your Dog For Travel

June 1, 2023
Do you have big plans for summer? It’s probably safe to say that your canine pal would be more than happy to go along with you. Just be sure to keep Fido crated for travel! A Columbia, MD vet goes over some of the main reasons why in this article.

Accidents

The biggest reason to crate Fido on car rides is that it will keep him from being thrown in case of an accident. While we hope that none of you get into accidents, either with or without your pets, it’s always a possibility!

Window Hazards

We know, we know, Fido looks adorable when he’s sticking his nose out the window. Unfortunately, that’s really dangerous. For one thing, your furry friend could get pebbles, insects, or even lit cigarette butts in his eyes, ears, nose, or mouth. And if you had to stop suddenly, he wouldn’t be in a safe position, and could be seriously hurt, even if you avoid an accident. Another thing to consider is the fact that your pup could step on the window controls. Rolling the window up or down is hazardous either way. If it goes up, your canine buddy could get choked. If it goes down, he could fall or jump out.

Jostles

Fido can sometimes get excitable, and he may move around, especially if he spots a cute poodle in the car in the next lane. Your pooch could potentially jostle you, which could cause you to lose control. You definitely don’t want that!

Safe Entry/Exit

Crating Fido also allows you to ensure that you have complete control over when and how he gets out of the car. While some pups are very good about this, others just want to bolt as soon as you open the door.

Comfort

Crates can be great tools, but only if Fido sees them as cozy dens. Add bedding and toys to make it more welcoming. (Save the treats for rest breaks, though: you don’t want your pooch gnawing or chewing something in a moving vehicle.)

Tips

Whether you’re going on a bona-fide road trip or just running to the store, never leave Fido unattended in the car. This is especially important in hot weather, as temperatures can reach deadly levels in minutes! As your Columbia, MD veterinary clinic, we’re dedicated to providing top-notch care.
