6 Simple Ways To Keep Your Cat Healthy

September 1, 2021
September is a pretty important month for our feline friends: it’s Happy, Healthy Cat Month! This is one occasion we can definitely get behind! Read on as a local Columbia, MD vet offers some tips on keeping your kitty both happy and healthy.

Veterinary Care

Fluffy may not be particularly happy about visiting us—she’d probably prefer to take another nap—but she will be much healthier with proper care. Most of our feline patients should come in at least once a year, though kittens and seniors need more frequent visits. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Kittyproofing

One of the best ways to keep Fluffy healthy is to simply keep her out of mischief. Cats certainly have a knack for getting into trouble! It’s a good idea to do some kittyproofing, particularly if you have a young, super-frisky furball. Some of the things you’ll need to keep out of paws’ reach include toxic plants; wires and cords; plastic bags and ties; chemicals; medicine; and anything small or sharp.

Grounding

We always recommend keeping kitties safe and sound indoors. Even if Fluffy loves exploring, she’s simply much safer inside, where she is safe from things like cars, weather, and stray or wild animals. Bring the inside in by offering lots of toys, and setting out some non-toxic plants for your furball to nibble on and hide behind.

Good Food

Proper nutrition will also make a big difference in Fluffy’s overall health and well-being. Get your kitty a good, high-quality cat food, one that’s appropriate for her age and lifestyle. Your vet can give you recommendations. Fresh water is also crucial.

Playtime

Obesity is a fairly common problem among our sleepy feline pals. The most popular kitty workout is, of course, playing. Taking a few minutes a day to hold a wand toy in front of your furry buddy will help keep her fit. Fluffy may also benefit from having some things that she can climb and play on, such as cat towers and catwalks. Activity is also good for your pet’s mind!

Love

Speaking of Fluffy’s mind, pets’ emotional and mental health has a huge effect on their physical condition. Provide your furball with kitty luxuries, like beds and catnip, and pay her lots of attention. Do you need to make an appointment for your kitty?
