October is National Pet Wellness Month! Our furry friends really do bring a lot of love and laughter to our lives, and they deserve to be comfortable, happy, and safe. Read on as a Columbia, MD vet lists some things you can do to make sure that your pet is healthy and content.
Veterinary Appointment
The best way to make sure that your four-legged friend is healthy is to bring him or her in for a checkup. We recommend that dogs and cats be fixed and microchipped. You’ll also need to keep up with your pet’s exams, vaccinations, and parasite control products.
Pet Fountain
Making sure your four-legged pal always has clean, fresh water is very important. Consider getting them a pet fountain.
Playtime
Playing isn’t just fun for pets: it benefits them both mentally and physically. Spend a few minutes with your furry best friend, and indulge them in a fun play session. You’ll also want to make sure your pet has toys they can play with when you aren’t around.
Closet Cleanout
Go through your pet’s things, and make sure everything is still in good condition. Toss and replace anything that is worn, stained, or expired. You’ll also want to clean their toys, bedding, and dishes.
Grooming
Has it been a while since Fido had a bath? Is Fluffy looking a bit unkempt? Indulge your pet with an at-home beauty session, or take them to the salon for a spa day.
Walk
This one mostly applies to dogs, though if your cat likes being walked on a leash, by all means indulge her. Take advantage of autumn’s crisp air and colorful foliage, and bring Fido for a walk in a beautiful park.
Petproofing
Never underestimate Fido and Fluffy’s capacity for getting into mischief. Do a quick check of your home, and address anything that could be dangerous. This includes things like toxic plants, small or sharp objects, chemicals, plastic bags and ties, and, well, anything you don’t want your pet eating or playing with.
Love
Last but not least, pay lots of attention to your dog or cat, and spend time with them daily. Pets are always happier and less stressed when they feel loved and safe!
