Kitty Vocalizations

April 1, 2020

Is your kitty a furry little chatterbox? Or does Fluffy only speak when she wants to give you a command, like ‘Fill My Bowl’ or ‘Pick Me Up?’ Just like people, cats all have their own unique voices. An Ellicott City, MD vet discusses the cat’s meow in this article.

The History Of The Meow

Cats have many adorable traits, but the meow is without a doubt one of the most charming. Actually, it may not be a coincidence that we find kitty vocalizations so cute. The fact that cats sometimes sound rather like human babies may also not be coincidental. As it turns out, Fluffy may have started meowing just to boss her humans around. Our feline overlords rarely ‘speak’ to one another, once they’re grown. They usually only talk to their humans.

Talking To Fluffy

Talking to your pet is a great way to make her feel loved and safe. Your furball will know that you’re trying to communicate with her. She may even talk back! You may very well find that the more you interact with your pet, the more interactive she becomes. This can be good for you, too! After all, cats are great listeners, and they won’t spill your secrets. Of course, some kitties are quite chatty. Your feline pal may want to berate you for being out too long, or tell you that she pushed her toy under the couch again.

Changes In Vocalizations

One thing to look—or in this case, listen—for is a change in Fluffy’s vocalizations. This can be a sign that something is wrong. If your normally-talkative pet just doesn’t have much to say, she may not be feeling well. A quiet cat that suddenly starts crying incessantly may also be sick. Call your vet right away if you notice any sudden and/or significant changes in your cat’s meowing habits.

Clicking

Does your cat sometimes make clicking noises when she looks out the window and sees birds or squirrels? This is one of Fluffy’s more perplexing quirks. Kitties often do this when they spot something they would consider prey in the wild. Is this noise actually the sound our feline pals make when they shift gears and go from ‘pet’ mode to ‘predator’ mode? The cat has her own tongue on this one!
