7 Easy Ways To Pamper A Senior Cat

August 1, 2019
Cats become seniors around age 7 or so. As your feline buddy ages, you’ll see some changes in her appearance and behavior. Fluffy will slow down, and become less frisky. Believe it or not, she’ll also sleep even more than she used to. Your pet will always be the same cute, charismatic furball as ever, but she’ll benefit from some extra TLC in her golden years. Read on as a Columbia, MD vet offers tips on how to spoil an older cat.

Beds

One of the best ways to keep your kitty comfortable is to make sure she has lots of comfy beds and napping spots. Fluffy should have a few spots in every room, whether it’s a store-bought bed, an ottoman, or a folded-up blanket in a box or basket.

Kitty Stairs

Your cat won’t be able to jump as high as she used to. Get pet ramps for Fluffy, or set out footstools, so she can reach her favorite perches.

Playtime

Taking a few minutes a day to play with Fluffy will benefit her both mentally and physically. This will be fun for you both!

Stimulation

Don’t leave your cat in a quiet house with nothing to do all day. If Fluffy stays home while you go to work, keep a TV or radio playing for her. Turn a light on if you’ll be gone after dark, so she isn’t sitting alone in a dark house. Nightlights will also help. Your kitty will also enjoy a comfy window seat with a good view.

Grooming

Fluffy may not be able to groom herself as well as she once did. Brush her regularly to keep her coat soft and smooth.

Veterinary Care

Keeping up with Fluffy’s veterinary appointments is very important. At home, watch for any indications of sickness, such as hiding, vomiting, or reduced appetite. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything.

Senior-Friendly Litterbox

Fluffy may have difficulty using a litterbox with high sides. Get your cat a powder room with low walls, which will be easier for her to step in and out of. If your house has more than one floor, keep litterboxes on every level. That way, your kitty won’t have to use the stairs as much. Please contact us, your local Columbia, MD vet clinic, for your senior cat’s veterinary care needs. We’re happy to help.
