Frozen Treats for Fido

August 1, 2021
Does your dog get very excited if he notices you eating something that smells yummy? Fido is probably more interested in things like burgers and chicken than in cold treats like ice cream. However, your canine pal can have his own version of this summer snack. A local Ellicott City, MD vet discusses some frozen treats for dogs in this article.

Ice Cream

You can find ice cream for Fido in many pet stores and supermarkets, but it’s quite easy to make your own. You’ll want to start with a base. You can mix and match from a list of items, including natural peanut butter, sodium-free broth, plain yogurt, ripe bananas, pureed squash or pumpkin, and liver powder. For extra tail wags, add ‘toppers’ like bacon bits, pieces of kibble, shredded meat or cheese, broken dog treats, or pet-safe fruits and veggies, such as peas or blueberries.

Pupsicles

Another option is to take chew sticks and put them in small waxed paper cups. Pour some water or sodium-free broth over them. When you want to give Fido his snack, just pop it out of the cup.

Cube Treats

This one is great, because it’s so versatile. Start with an ice cube tray. Add shredded meat, fish, or poultry; cheese; bacon bits; kibble; and/or safe fruits and veggies. Then, pour water or sodium-free broth over it. Try different combinations, and see what your pup likes best. Use turkey broth, canned turkey, peas, and carrots, or maybe salmon, spinach, and fish broth.

Sausage Rolls

Get a pre-cooked roll of hamburger, ground chicken, or sausage, and keep it in the freezer. Carefully slice off a thin strip when you want to give your furry buddy his snack.

Kong Toys

Kong toys are a huge favorite among our canine companions. You can stuff one with peanut butter, squeezable cheese, canned dog treat filling, or other goodies, and freeze overnight. Done!

Tips

These are just a few of the things you can make for Fido. There are many more. Just take care not to give your four-legged friend anything that isn’t safe for him. Some unsafe items include garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; grapes, currants, and raisins; meat on the bone; nuts; chocolate; caffeine; and anything that contains xylitol.
