Fourth of July Pet Safety

July 1, 2021
The Fourth of July is just a few days off. The summer holiday is traditionally a time for people to gather with friends and family, grill up some burgers, and just enjoy the summer weather. Pets often Read on as a local Columbia, MD vet lists some ways to keep your beloved furry friend safe over America’s birthday.

Keep Your Pet Safe

This is one of the most dangerous holidays for dogs, in large part because of fireworks. Fido doesn’t understand what’s going on, and he often finds the light and commotion absolutely terrifying. Even the most faithful dog can bolt if they get scared! Bring your pup indoors before it gets dark, and set him up in a quiet back room with comfy bedding, toys, treats, and comfy bedding. Turn a TV or radio on to mask the noise. Don’t let your pet run around off-leash this week, and if you have a yard, limit his outdoor time after dark. This applies to cats, too! Keep Fluffy indoors.

Protect Pets From The Heat

We’re moving into the hottest part of the year, so be extra vigilant about temperatures. Make sure that Fido and Fluffy always have access to cool, shady areas. Your furry pal will also need plenty of cool, clean water. Your pet probably won’t mind a cold snack, either. Cold sodium-free broth is a good bet for both our canine and feline buddies.

Be Mindful Of Food

Are you joining the millions of people who will be grilling out this year? If so, your four-legged friend may very well be joining the millions of pets begging for handouts. Go ahead and give Fido or Fluffy some plain, cooked meat, fish, or chicken. Fido may also want a burger, hot dog, or sausage. However, don’t give your pet meat on the bone; garlic and onions; avocado; grapes and raisins; meat on the bone; chocolate; pitted fruits; or xylitol.

Protect Pets From Parasites

Fleas, ticks, and other uninvited guests may very well try to crash your event. Keep up with your furry bff’s parasite control products! Trimming your lawn will also help, as fleas and ticks love tall grass. Ask your vet for specific advice.  Enjoy your holiday! Please do not hesitate to reach out if ever we could be of assistance. As your Columbia, MD vet clinic, we are always here to help!
