Small Dog Care Tips

May 1, 2020

Our canine pals come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, from massive Great Danes to tiny, feisty Chihuahuas. Fido’s size definitely has a huge effect on his overall care needs. Read on for some tips from a Columbia, MD vet on caring for a small dog.

Training

Don’t think that just because your pet is small that he’s excused from behaving properly. Many little dogs aren’t fully trained. As a result, they can be prone to bad behaviors, like nipping at people. Teach your pooch basic commands, like Sit, Stay, and Come. If your canine companion is easily frightened, you may also want to teach him to put a paw on your leg if he feels scared, so you’ll pick him up.

Eyes

Little dogs often get watery eyes. This is likely because, being so close to the ground, they get a lot of dust in their eyes. Keep your pup’s eyes clean! If your four-legged friend has fur tufts that grow close to his eyes, use blunt-end scissors to carefully clip these.

Dental Care

We often see dental issues, such as overcrowding, in smaller breeds. Keep up with Fido’s dental care needs, and have his choppers checked regularly.

Exercise

Proper activity is important for dogs of all sizes. It’s particularly important for small dogs, as they can become obese so easily. However, little pooches often get quite a bit of activity just running around the house on those tiny legs. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Gear

When shopping for your furry pal, always get products that were specifically made for little breeds. Your pet could choke or injure himself on things made for bigger dogs! Your vet may recommend using a harnesses, rather than collars, on Fido. It’s easy for little dogs to choke themselves if they run at something when they are on a leash.

Weather

Winter isn’t much fun for small dogs. Fido may be well over his head after a heavy snowfall! And, as you can imagine, being barefoot in snow that goes up to your belly isn’t very pleasant. You may want to get a little puppy lawn for him to use in a pinch. If your canine companion has thin fur, he’ll likely also appreciate having a jacket in winter.
