Dog Bathing Mistakes

October 1, 2019
It’s no secret that most of our canine pals are not very fond of getting bathed. In fact, Fido may run and hide as soon as he hears that dreaded B-word. Regardless of your cute pet’s opinion on the matter, baths are very important to his health and well-being. However, there are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when getting your furry friend clean. A local Columbia, MD vet lists a few of them below.

Not Using Pet Products

One common mistake is using the wrong products. Never use shampoos or conditioners made for humans on Fido. Dogs’ skin has a different PH balance than ours does. This could irritate your pet’s skin, or strip his coat of oils.

Wrong Bath Schedule

How often Fido needs to be bathed will depend on his breed and coat. Some pooches need monthly baths, while others may only need a few baths a year. If you don’t bathe your canine friend enough, you’ll end up with a stinky dog. If your pooch has long fur, he could also get painful mats and tangles. Bathing your pet too often is also an issue, though, as this can strip the oils from your four-legged friend’s fur, and leave him looking dry and even frizzy. Ask your vet for advice.

Wrong Water Temperature

Man’s Best Friend has very sensitive skin. Water that just seems a little hot to us could be scalding to your furry pal. Use lukewarm water when bathing your pooch.

Punishment

We know, you probably won’t be thrilled if your pup jumps out of the tub mid-bath and gets water and suds everywhere. However, if you reprimand Fido, you’ll only make him even more anxious about baths. Make bathtime easy on your pooch by talking to him gently during the process. If your pet really hates baths, you may need to do a bit of work with him. Have your canine companion come into the bathroom, and then have him jump into the tub. Then, instead of giving your dog a bath, give him a yummy treat, like a piece of steak. Keep doing this even after your dog seems more comfortable with the bathroom. The after-bath treat is also a must. Please reach out to us, your local Columbia, MD vet clinic, for all of your dog’s veterinary care needs. We’re dedicated to offering great veterinary care.
