Signs That Your Cat is Happy

September 1, 2019
Kitties are notoriously enigmatic little furballs. Fluffy bites affectionately, ignores us when we call her, and can be pretty standoffish about being petted. How do you tell if your cat is happy? A Ellicott City, MD vet offers some clues in this article.

Purrs

Cats have many adorable traits, but one of the cutest ones is the fact that they purr when they are content. If Fluffy runs her engine a lot, she’s probably not unhappy.

Cuddles

Does your feline buddy sometimes meow to be picked up? Does Fluffy start purring as soon as you pet her? She’s probably pretty pleased with the care you give her!

Smug Look

Cats are very, very good at looking pleased with themselves. That adorable smug look kitties do so well is another thumbs-up for you.

Friskiness

Happy cats are frisky cats, especially when they are young. If Fluffy is playful, curious, or even a bit nosy, you’re being a good pet parent!

Using You As Furniture

Kitties love to nap. If Fluffy likes to doze off in your arms or on your lap, it’s a good sign that she is content.

Relaxed Kitty

Cats are both predators and prey in the wild, so they tend to naturally be on their guard. If Fluffy tends to sprawl out in the middle of the floor or drape herself across your sofa, it means she feels relaxed and safe.

Positive Health Checkups

Although many of our furry patients are not particularly enthusiastic about visiting us, proper veterinary care is a big part of keeping your cat content. After all, healthy pets are happy pets!

Vocalizations

Some kitties are basically furry little chatterboxes, that will ‘talk’ with their owners about, well, pretty much anything. If Fluffy meows back when you address her, she feels confidant and attached to you.

Kitty Affection

Purrs aren’t the only way kitties show affection. Fluffy may rub against your legs, blink slowly when she looks at you, or follow you around. Some cats even let their humans rub their bellies!

Good Appetite

Cats often go off their food if they feel scared, sick, or lonely. If your feline companion has a good appetite, you may very well have a content kitty on your hands.
