Keeping Fido Safe at the Pool

June 1, 2018
Do you plan to take your pooch swimming this summer? Many of our canine buddies love cooling off on hot days by taking a dip at the pool. Just be sure to put Fido’s safety first. Pools can be very dangerous for Man’s Best Friend! Here, a Columbia, MD vet discusses keeping your pup safe poolside.

Swim Lessons

Some of our canine friends take to water naturally. Retrievers, for example, absolutely love to swim. Other pooches must be taught. If your pup isn’t exactly taking to water like a furry, four-legged duck, spend some time giving him doggy swimming lessons.

This Way Out

Making sure your dog knows how to get out of the pool is very important! That way, if Fido falls into the pool, he can get out again. Therefore, the first thing you’ll want to do when taking your four-legged pal to a pool is to show him where the exit is. Spend a little time on this, and make sure it sinks in. Test your furry friend’s knowledge regularly by walking to the side of the pool across from the steps and calling him to you. It’s also not a bad idea to get doggy pool stairs.

Safety

Generally, you’ll want to use the same types of water safety precautions with a dog as you would with a young child. Never, ever leave Fido unattended near water. It only takes a moment for accidents to happen! Pool covers can also be very dangerous for playful pups. It’s very easy for Fido to jump onto a cover, not realizing it isn’t a solid surface. To be on the safe side, we recommend fencing the pool off when it’s not in use.

Paw Care

Fido’s paw pads are very delicate. Just like human feet, they are especially soft when they’re wet. Your canine pal can easily get painful blisters by running on a hot or harsh surface after going swimming. Try to keep your pooch on soft ground when he gets out of the water. Paw balm will also help protect his paws.

Water

While it isn’t always easy to stop dogs from drinking pool water, if you do see Fido lapping some up, immediately give him some fresh water instead. Please contact us, your Columbia, MD pet clinic, if ever we can be of assistance. We are always happy to help!
