DIY Cat Furniture

May 1, 2016
Does your kitty have furniture of her own? While Fluffy probably doesn’t have many qualms about getting comfy on our chairs, sofas, and beds, she will enjoy having some things she doesn’t have to share with her humans. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on your cat’s furniture, however. You can make some great pieces by going the DIY route! In this article, a Columbia, MD vet lists some great options for cat furniture you can make yourself.

Cat Tower

An old wooden stepladder can make a great cat tower. Just add planks to widen the steps a bit, so your kitty has some lounging spots. Then, cover it in carpet or sisal rope. You can also use an old metal storage rack, or even a bookshelf. Of course, if you’re a handy type, you can make Fluffy a cat tower from scratch, using lumber.

Kitty Condo

You can make your furball a kitty condo out of an old tee shirt and a wire hangar. Look online for step-by-step instructions. Another cute option is to just take a cardboard box or plastic storage tote, and cut a hole in one side to make a door. Then, add a soft blanket or pillow. To make it more attractive, you can cover it with contact paper or even a pretty fabric.

Hammock

To make Fluffy a hammock, you’ll just need to get a coffee table or end table with four legs. Cut an old blanket or towel so that it is just a bit smaller than the tabletop, and then use string, rope, or Velcro to attach the corners to the table legs. Presto! Instant purr!

Bed

If there’s one thing we know for sure about our feline friends, it’s that they love taking naps. You can make your sleepy furball a cute bed out of an old sweater. Use a pet-safe stuffing to fill the sleeves and torso, and then sew the openings closed. Next, sew the sleeves to the torso. You’ll want to make an oval shape. You can also make Fluffy a cozy bed simply by folding a blanket and putting it in a wicker basket or shallow box. Do you have any questions or concerns about your cat’s health or care? Call us!
