7 Key Aspects of Responsible Dog Ownership

Did you know that September is the AKC’s Responsible Dog Ownership Month? This is a great time to discuss Fido’s care, and highlight some of the things our canine pals need to stay happy and healthy. An Ellicott City, MD vet discusses responsible dog ownership below.

Training

While you don’t have to teach Fido cute tricks like Shake or Roll Over, it is important for him to know basic doggy obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. If your furry buddy doesn’t have these basics mastered yet, take your pet back to school!

Veterinary Care

Proper veterinary care is crucial to Fido’s health and well-being! We recommend that all dogs be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on all vaccinations, exams, and parasite control products. At home, watch for signs of illness, and contact your vet immediately if you notice anything unusual. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Good Nutrition

While Fido will no doubt happily eat anything and everything you put in his plate, it’s important to offer your canine friend good, high-quality food. We know, many people love to pamper their pets with yummy snacks. Treats are fine, but opt for healthy ones, and don’t go overboard.

Exercise

Exercise is just as important for dogs as it is for people! Fido’s exact activity needs will depend on his age, size, weight, and health, so ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Toys/Stimulation

We all know that playing is fun for Fido, but did you know it’s also great for him, both physically and mentally? Playing helps keep dogs active, offers them beneficial mental stimulation, and helps them burn off excess energy. Keep your canine buddy’s toy box full, and take time to play with him every day.

Grooming

Fido may not exactly love his baths, but he’ll look and feel better with proper grooming. Keep up with your pet’s beauty regimen. Doggy dental care is also very important, as is keeping your pup’s nails clipped.

Comfort and Love

Man’s Best Friend needs to feel loved, safe, and comfortable to truly thrive. Pay lots of attention to your furry best friend, and keep that cute tail wagging!
